It’s that time again–time for you to worry about giving (or not giving) a holiday gift on behalf of your physical therapy practice. Depending on the size of your practice, you may have a sizeable list of referral sources, vendors, and fellow business owners you want to send gifts to. If you haven’t gotten it figured out yet, don’t stress! There are lots of last minute holiday gifts you can give this year without breaking the bank.
Give local goodies
You’d be hard pressed to find a back office staff that didn’t go ga-ga over a box of baked goods, sweet treats, or a nice bag of coffee. Supporting a local coffee shop or bakery through your purchase is a great way to support your community, and it makes sense for private practice PTs to shop & gift locally! Call me a Pacific Northwesterner, but you can even give beer or wine! (Just make sure the recipient is cool with it.) Make the gift extra memorable with a personalized stamp or sticker with your logo. Add a ribbon, a pretty card, and make sure to hand deliver your goodies! The real treat is getting out there and sharing the holiday spirit.

Why not put your holiday budget toward a meaningful cause? Many organizations have ways to donate on behalf of someone else–what better way to honor a referral source or community partner? Pick something important to you and your staff. Some ideas:
- Sponsor a Special Olympics athlete. Contact your area Special Olympics chapter to find out if you can direct your donation to a local athlete.
- Plant a tree. Actually, plant many trees–the Arbor Day Foundation plants a tree in one of two National Forests for every dollar you donate. There are no shortage of organizations supporting healthier forests and communities around the world, like Trees for the Future, The Nature Conservancy and American Forests.
- Give to a non-profit organization that works to improve lives through movement. Some of our favorites include Girls on the Run, Team Red White & Blue, The Wounded Warriors Project, and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
Go giftless (but definitely send a card)
Contrary to popular belief, there’s no unwritten law that you HAVE to give gifts. Sending (or hand delivering!) a nice holiday card is always appreciated and a wonderful reminder of the professional relationships you maintain throughout the year. So if you go giftless, make sure you send that card!
